Staying in Touch With a Ghost

Hello again from Kathy,
This week I’ve chosen the energetic whirlwind of the first movement from Beethoven’s inimitable ‘Ghost’ Trio performed by Harry Ward (violin) and Timo-Veikko Valve – ‘Tipi’ (cello) joining me at the piano.

Composed in 1808 and dedicated to the extraordinary patron, Countess Marie von Erdödy, in return for her hospitality, this movement is one Beethoven’s most thrilling and engaging. Sparkling with life right from the boisterous opening, Beethoven was very deaf by this point and suffering numerous maladies which makes this brilliant and joyous movement even more of a miracle.

The Trio was part of a program recorded and filmed live at City Recital Hall last June. Some years ago I invited Harry to be a part of our A Little Lunch Music series at City Recital Hall when he was just 11 years old, so it was with delight that I asked him to join me and the incredible Tipi for this stunning program which was to celebrate the Master’s 250th birthday year.
