Do your kids love honey? Love bees? Love getting dressed up? Join a local beekeeper for a unique school holiday experience as your kids learn about the life cycle of these amazing creatures and the important part they play in our food production. We meet at Hamish’s place in Bowral (address supplied after booking) and start with morning tea and a honey tasting where we get to try honey from different times of the year and see the difference in colour, viscosity and flavour. We then go through the life cycle of a bee and the ways the colony respond to the seasons. After the theory and some worksheets we suit up in professional beekeeping suits and gloves and get up close and personal with the bees! Parents are welcome to sit in on this experience and watch the kids amongst the hives from a safe distance. Hamish does offer adult workshops if you want to learn more about backyard beekeeping (AirBeeNBee) . Group sizes are limited to 4x children at any one session.
In this experience, your kids will be walking down my backyard in a bee suit and gloves. The suit covers you from ankles to wrists and includes a hat and veil. The only thing your kids need is fully enclosed shoes. A pair of leather boots is ideal. There are a few steps and some uneven ground. We may “smoke” the hives so kids may end up smelling of eucalyptus smoke. This activity is best suited to 8-12 year olds. Older children can join the adult sessions.

I am a keen beekeeper and got my first hives at high school. I love my bees for their work pollinating the food we eat, from environmental impacts, through to the fascinating way they communicate and interact. And they make awesome honey! I am a strong advocate for inclusion, the rights of LGBTIQA people and acknowledge that these experiences take place on Gundangara lands and that sovereignty was never ceded. I have formal training qualifications, I’m a local dad and have a current Working With Children check.

I run these workshops in my backyard in Bowral. My home is on the side of the Gib and is easy walking distance from town or the local railway station. There is plenty of on street parking.

Tickets must be pre-booked.
