This is the ultimate gift for an ultimate dad! Send him along on a unique experience where he can suit up, visit some local bees, collect honey and then make cocktails with it as the sun sets over beautiful Bowral.
Honey is a remarkable food, medicine, and ingredient. The taste, viscosity, colour, and aromas are linked directly to the floral sources available to the bees. In this gourmet food experience, you will join a local food and wine enthusiast, beekeeper and bon vivant on the ultimate mixology experience.
We start with your arrival at Hamish’s apiary in Bowral, and after a quick overview of a colony we “suit up” in a professional sting proof suit and go to the hives. You’ll be up up close and personal as the foragers come in from their day collecting pollen and nectar, it’s quite a sight. Hamish will then show you the workings of a beehive and the process of harvesting honey with the Flow Hive system.
After the hives we then retire to the viewing area and Hamish will run you through a few of his favourite honey based cocktails as the sun sets over Mount Gibraltar.
We time this experience so that you can then head from cocktails into town for dinner.
You will need fully enclosed shoes to be able to do this (boots that cover your ankles are ideal). If you have ever had an anaphylactic response to a bee sting you won’t be able to do this activity.
Location
You’ll be at Hamish’s apiary in Bowral township. It is a lovely open area with beehives, undercover seating areas (if it’s raining), and views to Mt Gibraltar to watch the sunset.
I am a keen beekeeper and got my first hives at school. I love my bees for their work pollinating the food we eat, their environmental impacts, and the fascinating way they communicate and interact. And they make awesome honey!
I am a strong advocate for inclusion, the rights of LGBTIQA people and acknowledge that these experiences take place on Gadigal lands and that sovereignty was never ceded.
My apiary is just as you enter Bowral township, just past the pool. Turn into Victoria St from Mittagong Rd. LOTS of off-street parking. It is a 6min walk from the railway station and minutes from all the main shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs.
Although the group size is limited to 6x it is possible to host a larger group; I simply bring along another beekeeper. Likewise you can request a date.
