The Artists of the Round Yard are an artists collective based at James Fairfax’s country ‘pile’ – Retford Park. Gifted to the National Trust on his passing in 2016 this Italianate mansion was built by Samuel Horden in 1887 and is a spectacle to behold!
This (free) exhibition will be on display in two adjacent locations – the White Cottage Gallery and the Round Yard – the latter built by Horden in the late 1800’s to lunge his working horses to keep up their fitness levels – the hoof strikes are still visible on the walls! The building is now a Listed Property owing to its exquisite architecture (in particular the concentric vaulted roof beams) which very neatly complements the works on display.
Just a 100m stroll on-site leads you to the latest regional gallery in the state – Ngununggula, alongside Hearth (a cafe’ run by Moonacres, the famous cafe and farm out of Robertson).
The ARY exhibition is open Friday through Monday 10am to 4pm, Retford Park itself is doggie friendly and entry into the gardens is charged per National Trust rates.
