La Serenissima Reflections Of The Decadence And Decay Of Venice At The Milk Factory Gallery

Milk Factory Gallery, 33 Station Street, Bowral

Event Date: 6 Nov - 6 Dec 2021, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

A collection of painterly visions of the Adriatic jewel where layers of history are exposed, decadence and decay cohabitate, past glories fade with patina, the ordinary becomes extraordinary and the whole atmospheric of the old maritime city envelopes a besotted artist. “Bellissimo!” –  Bruce Chanter

‘My observations of Venice are through an artist’s eye. It is difficult to not over-praise or resort to cliché in this narrative. Venice never lets you down, its uniqueness of course lies in its lagoon location and in its preservation. Built on the muddy islands and fenlands of the Po basin, its sixteen centuries of development from early times through the Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods remain for the visitor to see today, the visual splendour of all those centuries past. This complexity of architectural styles and adornment make it, I believe, the most visually seductive of all the cities of the world.’
‘Bruce Chanter

“I find Venice a city of contrasts. Some parts are voluptuous, others forlorn, both mysterious, yet revealed, pious and debauched, energetic, yet languid, solid and liquid – a city of dichotomy. As a past leisure sailor and lover of the sea, I also find Venice’s maritime history adding further charisma to this special place. Its maritime heritage, so important to its success as an independent Republic when every other country in Europe was ruled by Royal or Papal decree, is embodied in this city known as the “mistress of the seas”.     Bruce Chanter

In 2020 Bruce Chanter held an exhibition in the Pop-Up Gallery 2  just after lock down was lifted. The exhibition  ‘Memoires De France’ was a sell-out  show with many art lovers  and collectors purchasing more than one work that rekindled memories of overseas travel and their love of France. This exhibition is similar but different featuring Venice in all its glory, decadence and decay.
