Wanderings through the physical world and the imagination in between lockdowns
While passionate about composition and technique, nostalgia and childhood memory are strong themes in Andrew’s work. His aim in combining these areas of interest is to create (as Jeffrey Smart might say) “beautiful pictures”, that connect with the viewer via either subject or mood. Andrew subscribes to the view that the best landscape painting occurs when one knows the subject well – Australian colour palettes and motifs feature heavily in his work. Progress means that the role of the urban landscape artist is also that of a documentarian – many of the architectural subjects that he has painted have since been demolished or remodelled beyond what his work recognises.
