Selby & Friends concludes its 17th season of “chamber music at its best” with a kaleidoscopic program of works for piano trio by Aaron Copland, Anton Arensky and Franz Schubert. Artistic Director Kathryn Selby’s highly accomplished guest artists, violinist Ike See and cellist Richard Narroway, are two of Australia’s most talented musicians of the younger generation.  Ike See, a core member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra and former Associate Concertmaster of the Adelaide Symphony, studied at the Royal School of Music and Trinity College, London, as well as the famed Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Cellist Richard Narroway has performed in illustrious concert halls all around the world, and is acclaimed for his wide-ranging interests as a performer, recording artist and educator, currently as Head of Cello at the illustrious Melbourne Conservatory. Renowned Australian pianist Kathryn Selby AM is Australia’s pre-eminent chamber music pianist and a powerful entrepreneurial force on the arts scene. “Final Statements” concerts open with the one-of-a-kind trio Vitebsk, a personal statement by Aaron Copland on the dramatic and sometimes brutal historical experiences of Jews living in Russia. In clear juxtaposition to the Copland, the next work, the Piano Trio No. 1 by Aaron Arensky, reflects on the beauty of Russian Romanticism. The influence of the great Tchaikovsky upon Arensky is undeniable in this powerful and passionate music. Finally, Franz Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 1, a beautifully melodious work completed in the last year of the composer’s life, celebrates the culmination of Selby & Friends’ 2023 season. This monumental work is sure to ignite anticipation of the upcoming 2024 Season, opening next March! Selby & Friends tours with five concert programs each season to Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide, the NSW Southern Highlands and Turramurra on Sydney’s Upper North Shore. The “Final Statements” tour takes place from October 29th through November 6th, 2023. With a nod to the pleasure of presenting two superlative chamber musicians of the younger generation to Australian audiences, Artistic Director Kathryn Selby comments on this upcoming tour: “Our season comes to a close with a spectacularly personal program filled with song and passion. I’m so looking forward to working with Ike and Richard together after years of watching them both bring so much to the Australian music environment.”
