A Showcase of Southern Highlands Talent
The June concert series of the Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra to be held on 25/26 June at Oxley College will be a celebration of the wealth of performing arts talent we have here in the Southern Highlands.
In addition to the accomplished musicians who make up the Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra itself, the concert will feature a new work by local composer John Corley entitled “Mollitiam” (Resilience) – a word that resonates very strongly with the attributes one needs to cope with the challenges of the world of today.
The two featured soloists on the program Alexandra Donaldson (clarinet) and Emily Sinden (violin) are both local musicians who have made ongoing major contributions to the musical life of the Southern Highlands through teaching and their involvement with the SHSO. Alex will perform Australian composer John Carmichael’s delightful suite of three dance movements Fetes Champetres and Emily will be guest artist in Pierre Rode’s Violin Concerto No. 7.
The Latin American idiom and the rich orchestration of Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1 give it an exuberance and bravura that will be magically enhanced by the young dancers from Angus & Lucinda’s Academie de Danse.
The magic continues with the SHSO in full orchestral flight in Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance No. 7 and Tchaikovsky’s brilliant Capriccio Italien.
This will be a concert of inspiration and joy…and acknowledgement of the abundance of musical talent to be found here in our Southern Highlands.
