Retford Park - National Trust of Australia (NSW)

1325 Old South Road, Bowral
PH. 02 4861 1933 /

James Fairfax AC has always believed that Retford Park should be preserved for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations, particularly those of the local district. On 19th April 2016 and in fulfilment of his ambition, Mr. Fairfax gifted his historic Retford Park home to the National Trust of Australia (NSW). It was in August 2017 that the National Trust officially took control of the property.

Retford Park is a place of great heritage significance. Its European history extends back to grants of land promised to Edward Riley senior by Governor Macquarie in 1821.

The house was built in 1887 by Samuel Hordern (1849-1909) merchant and stockbreeder, and his wife Jane nee Booth. The house at Retford Park (designed by Albert Bond) is set on a low rise, a grand rendered brick Italianate style residence. It was in 1964 that James Fairfax bought the property and started to turn it from an agricultural property to a gentleman's residence.

Having been in the caring hands of Mr Fairfax for over 50 years, the garden is a delight to wonder through. As you venture up the driveway the grand Victorian Italianate homestead appears from a towering arboretum of a magnificent collection of evergreen and deciduous trees, some very rare and unique.

Surrounding the eastern side of the homestead is a patchwork of hedged gardens showcasing everything from a detailed knot garden, exquisite swimming pool and pavilion, sculptures demanding centre stage and even a friendly family of five emus.

Note: The gardens of Retford Park are managed sustainably. Herbicides and other chemicals have been phased out.

Open Gardens:
From March 2018, the gardens will be open to the public on the first weekend of each month (except January). Although food and refreshments will be available when the garden is open for public inspection, you are more than welcome to bring a picnic as there are many idyllic spots to claim for a lazy lunchtime.

Open Garden entry fees:

Adults - $15

Concession - $10

Children - $5

Family (2a, 2c) $35

National Trust members - Free

The Robertson Hotel

1 Fountaindale Road, Cnr Illawarra Hwy, Robertson
PH. 02 4885 1111 /

Impeccable maintained, the gardens and grounds of the Robertson Hotel sprawl across 14 acres, and are filled with age-old trees and magical surprises, such as the Grotto, which was built by the Franciscan Friars during their tenure here in the 1940s.

Heritage rainforest surrounds the gardens, and leads you to the hotel?s private train platform. You will love exploring the lush grounds, soaking up the healing, restorative atmosphere, with fresh, clean, crisp air, an abundance of Australian native plants as well as fauna from across the Globe, and you?ll be sure to spot the odd critter or two. Think: fluffy white tailed rabbits, guinnae fowl, wombats, alpacas, chickens and trout in our lake, and that?s before you even get to your petting zoo!

Be sure to look out for the Statue of Mary, which was imported directly from the Vatican, and the statue of Pan, who is resting in the gardens with his flute. At a certain time of day, the light falls on him and he seems to come to life, just like a real little boy.

Then, there is the stunning heart shaped pond with a large fig tree at its banks, and a breathtaking escarpment where the views out to the East and the ocean are unparalleled.

Or if you?re an onsite guest, book a picnic lunch, which we can set up in the area of your choice, and cater according to your dietary needs.

We can also set up an elegant outdoor dining setting for you and your loved ones to enjoy dinner under the star-lit skies of Robertson.
