10am to 5pm
Sturt Gallery & Studios, Cnr Range Rd & Waverley Pde, Mittagong
E. shop@sturt.nsw.edu.au

The natural landscape of the Southern Highlands inspires a stunning new exhibition of ceramic vessels by international artist in residence, Rachel Wood.

In awe and overwhelmed by the Australian bush on her first residency at Sturt Craft Centre in 2013, English ceramicist, Rachel Wood, has returned to Sturt this year to make new work on site specially for her solo exhibition, Sentient, to be presented in Sturt’s own gallery.

Rachel Wood is known for her expressive, visceral, calm and considered vessels, each brought to life with lively and complex surfaces. The unique personal touch of human spirit and physicality of the core material are key to Rachel's practical and intellectual ethos. Every fingerprint, tool mark, rip and join, trace the journey of her making with clay, just as every footstep in the Australian bush of the Southern Highlands infuses the images and feelings in her head and heart.

10 a.m. - 4.00 p.m.
Milk Factory Gallery - 33 Station Street Bowral
E. shirley@milkfactorygallery.com.au

Kim Shannon is an artist living and working in the Southern Highlands. Kim studied at the Julian Ashton Art School Sydney in the late 1960’s and later spent several years in London where she studied at the City and Guilds of London Art School and then at the Royal Academy Schools London, where she won a Gold Medal.
She has exhibited widely in Australia and overseas.

Still life, for me, expresses something about who we are; our culture and time; how we see the world, how we relate to the world through our surroundings and whatever our time and culture impose upon us. It is
also about the unchanging within ourselves and our changing
environment.

Having always enjoyed painting the coexistence of form and shadow
the more I look at these, the more I notice the shifting intangible
place of shadow, expressing both form and
light - together they establish the
place, time and space.

Artists by Nature

Friday 8 - Sunday 17 November
10 am to 5 pm
Henrietta Rose Room / Bowral Library ; 16-24 Bendooley street
E. artists.by.nature@hotmail.com

'Artists by Nature' is a celebration of two local artists, Hugh Symonds and Olivier Mesrobian coming together to have some fun, and taking their artwork beyond the formal gallery circuit to share with the local community. They hope this to be the first in a series of exhibitions where artists wanting to exchange ideas and philosophies, explore boundaries with artists, whilst also sharing their art and lifestyles with the community. They both feel a need for more exposure to the community to the work of it's local artists and also a need for a greater opportunity to sell their art.
Olivier, who prefers to be called MO, was born in Paris and was inspired by the Parisian architecture and natural light. Since moving to the Southern Highlands, MOs artwork has been influenced by the female form, space and light, exploring mixed media, resin, gold and silver leaf, creating textural semi-abstract

Retford Park Rehung - The Art of Collecting

Saturday 9 - Sunday 24 November
Retford Park, 1325 Old South Road, Bowral
PH. (02) 48611933

Retford Park Rehung – The Art of Collecting – House Tours included

This is an annual event where the main house of Retford Park gets rehung with artworks – this year it will be provided by Justin Miller Art – there will also be a satellite exhibition by Artists of the Round Yard (in-house art group based at Retford Park). There will be various events from 9 - 24 November including day tours, sunset tours, a dinner for 40 people and two dinners for 10.

“There are great benefits of collecting art. The bond between the work of art and its owner is different from the bond established by a spectator. The former involves a sense of permanence like a marriage, the latter may be nothing more than a casual liaison.”

Author: unknown

This November, the home of the late Mr James Fairfax AC, Retford Park, will again be a celebration of art. Fairfax gifted this wonderfully inspiring property in 2017 to the people of Australia via the National Trust. Now, each spring, the walls of Retford Park are rehung.

Justin Miller at Retford Park

To ensure the calibre of this exhibition meets the high standard of Fairfax’s collection, the National Trust of Australia (NSW) looked to Justin Miller of Justin Miller Art. Justin was the Chairman of Sotheby’s Australia for over ten years. He is currently one of Australia’s most trusted art advisors for private and corporate art collections, and he will both curate and provide the works for the main house.

With much of Australia’s fine art at his fingertips, Justin has secured a diverse and impressive range for the exhibition. Visitors will see the likes of Rosalie Gascoigne, Sidney Nolan, Margaret Preston, Brett Whiteley, Grace Cossington Smith, Jeffery Smart, Arthur Boyd, John Olsen and Tony Tuckson. Importantly, Fairfax also collected many of the artists in the exhibition. All of the works are available for purchase.

A tribute to the Fairfax legacy

For Fairfax, the power of collecting art, probably his greatest passion in life, was also an extraordinary act of philanthropy. He prodigiously funded many art institutions, including state galleries and the National Gallery of Australia.

“It is not often that the character and strength of a public art collection can be changed by a single individual. But this is exactly what James Fairfax did with the extraordinary wealth of works of art he donated to the Art Gallery of New South Wales. These donations have transformed the earlier European collection from the conventional to the quite splendid.”

Dr Michael Brand, Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales

Satellite exhibition outside the main house

Visitors will discover the Artists of the Round Yard Inc. outside of the main house, where the Art of Collecting continues. This is a creative group of painters, sculptors, printmakers, jewellers and photographers, based at Retford Park. Wandering through the gallery, garden and exquisite round yard slowly reveals their works.

The Pollinators

Wednesday 13th of November
6.30 pm
Empire Cinema, 327 Bong Bong St, Bowral
E. cecilia.kemp@wsc.nsw.gov.au

Thousands of semi-trailers crisscross the country in the dead of night delivering goods through the darkness to stores, warehouses and factories nationwide. But some of them carry an unsuspected and highly unusual cargo. Honey bees. Tens of billions of them are transported back and forth from one end of the United States to the other in a unique annual migration that’s indispensable to the feeding of America. One out of every three bites we eat, the growth of almost all our fruits, nuts and vegetables, would be impossible without pollination from bees. A new documentary feature, The Pollinators, directed by Peter Nelson and produced by Sally Roy, Nelson and Michael Reuter, presents the fascinating and untold story. And warns that the bees are in serious danger.

Bowral District Art Society. 1 Short Street, Bowral
E. office@bdasgallery.com

Southern Highlands artists Dean Boyce and Jane Courtenay have put together a striking
collection of their recent works.
Boyce, a retired journalist and author, has been painting since art school, now exclusively in watercolour. A figurative painter, his approach to subjects is eclectic, but favours landscapes and seascapes, the natural world. “There is something mystical about a good landscape in particular,” he says, “that entices the viewer into the frame to explore the painted world. That is what I strive for.”
Jane Courtenay works mainly in pastel. She has gained a widening following for her exquisite portraits. “I am always drawn to faces and would like my pictures to tell the subject’s story, to speak to the viewer,” she says.
Opening: Friday 15th Nov at 6pm.

A fresh homemade Halloumi bears little resemblance to its distant shop-bought relative – its flavour is delicate, creamy and salty-sweet and when grilled or fried with garlic and zucchini can made grown men cry. Best consumed with red wine. Take some with you from a local winery after this fabulous day out.
During the workshop we will also make ricotta and mascarpone, two simple but delicious uncultured Italian cheeses.

The class takes place in the kitchen of our beautiful permaculture farm set amongst the rolling hills of the Southern Highlands. All equipment, ingredients and a yummy homegrown, home-made lunch provided, but bring along an Esky or large waterproof box to take home your cheeses. Bookings essential.

Using table top puppets and beautiful shadow theatre Nella with the help of her audience will find a way to fly. Nella’s Wings is without text and is supported by recorded music and exquisite live singing by the solo performer, Sue Wallace one of Australia’s leading puppeteers.

Nella’s Wings has received a number of awards throughout the world. From Europe, Asia, Mexico and Australia it has captured audiences through the world of dreams and imagination."

ANNE of GREEN GABLES stage musical presented by The Highlands Theatre Group

Thursday 21 - Sunday 24 November
7:30pm evening and 2pm matinee performances.
Chevalier Performing Arts Centre, Charlotte St, Burradoo
E. secretary@htg.org.au

Based on the original book by Lucy Maud Montgomery and first published in 1908, this classic tale has been masterfully adapted for the stage, featuring beautiful, new music and inspiring choreography. Under the experienced direction of Rebecca Howarth, 'Anne of Green Gables' is a heart warming family show for young and old.
Set in the fictional village of Avonlea on Canada's Prince Edward Island, the story traces the lives of aging siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, when they are mistakenly sent flame- haired, feisty Anne Shirley from the orphanage, instead of the boy they'd hoped to adopt. Anne's boundless energy and her constant misadventures turn their quiet world upside down, as they learn to love her as if they'd each had a child of their own.
'Anne of Green Gables' is a delightful exploration of family loyalty and devotion to home, to be enjoyed by all.
Dates are Thurs 21/11 , Fri 22/11 and Sat 23/11 at 7.30pm Matinees are on Saturday 23/11 and Sunday 24/11 at 2pm.

Diana Weston – piano

Songs that are nice, songs that are nasty, songs that are just plain weird. But they all will charm you in one way or another.

There's Britten’s fascinating but unsettling A Charm of Lullabies, a selection from Christopher Robin’s Song Book (Harold Fraser-Simson/Milne) and more. It’s surprising how insightful a 3-year-old can be. Some floral gifts by Ann Carr-Boyd, and a concoction of spells in songs based on three Walter de la Mare poems by Diana Blom. Intertwining the song-sets are sonatas by Johann Christian Bach – tuneful, playful and charming.

1325 OLD SOUTH ROAD, BOWRAL
E. spollock@nationaltrust.com.au

James Fairfax AC has always believed that Retford Park should be preserved for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations, particularly those of the local district. On 19th April 2016 and in fulfilment of his ambition, Mr. Fairfax gifted his historic Retford Park home to the National Trust of Australia (NSW). It was in August 2017 that the National Trust officially took control of the property. Having been in the caring hands of Mr Fairfax for over 50 years, the garden is a delight to wander through. As you venture up the driveway the grand Victorian Italianate homestead appears from a towering arboretum of a magnificent collection of evergreen and deciduous trees, some very rare and unique. Surrounding the eastern side of the homestead is a patchwork of hedged gardens showcasing everything from a detailed knot garden, exquisite swimming pool and pavilion, sculptures demanding centre stage and even a friendly family of four emus Open Gardens:

The gardens are open to the public on the first weekend of each month. Light refreshments are available but you are more than welcome to bring a picnic as there are many idyllic spots to claim for a lazy lunchtime.
Cost:
• Adults - $15
• Concession - $10
• Family - $35
 • National Trust members - FREE
House Tours:
Tours of the main house are available on the February, May and August open weekends (and some extra ones are occasionally added to keep up with the demand). Cameo Theatre Co proudly presents Agatha Crusty And The Village Hall Murders

Saturday 30th of November
7.00pm
Mittagong Playhouse 114-116 Main Street, Mittagong NSW 2575
E. info@cameotheatre.org.au

Written by Derek Webb by arrangement with David Spicer Productions.
Agatha Crusty (pronounced Croosty) is a crime novelist. She's also pretty adept at solving crimes. Her sister-in-law Alice invites her to spend a few days with her in the village of Chortelby, but it's not long before she gets caught up in a series of murders seemingly directed at the All Saints Village Hall committee members.
From Toby, the Vicar, Eleanor, committee Chairperson to Harry Knott, caretaker and identical twins Olivia and Oliver Truscott-Pratt, there are plenty of suspects. With an investigating officer as incompetent as D.I. Twigg, there are plenty of laughs as the murders begin to pile up. Packed full of wit and very funny scenes, this is also a genuine murder mystery. Audiences will enjoy separating the red herrings from the real clues.
Tickets: Senior/Concession $20, Adult $24.
