Annual Koori Flagraising & Mirror Flash

The Woonjeegaribay Conciliation Group Inc. is pleased to announce the return of the Annual Koori Flagraising & Mirror Flash on from 1.00pm on Saturday, 12th April 2025, at Gibbergunyah Reserve, Bowral.

“This special event celebrates Gundungurra Country, acknowledges Elders past, present, and emerging, and brings communities together in a unique display of cultural connection.” Stated Kim Leevers, Convenor.

“The Koori Flagraising Ceremony takes place at nin garang thurree currobong (The place between the rocks) to honour all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”

The Welcome to Country & Smoking Ceremony are led by Aunty Trish Levett who said “This is great chance for mob to get together, pay respect, share yarns and connect to Country. I will bring some dancers and didge players including Uncle Peter Button. See you there!”

 There will be poetry and general discussion. An opportunity for reflection and opportunity to discuss local issues confronting the community, share and celebrate successes.

After a pause for refreshments the Mirror Flash from the Gundungurra Lookout to Leura in the Blue Mountains and return will take place from the Blue Mountains People for Reconcilation. This is a symbolic connection over 82km, uniting communities in recognition of the vast Gundungurra lands and is amazing to experience as acknowledged by the gasps and cries of recognition from the observers.

Last year, over 60 participants gathered to share in this moving experience, which was extended internationally for the first time via social media. The event provides an opportunity for allies to engage with local First Nations issues and actively support community initiatives.

All are welcome to attend this free community event. Meet at Gibbergunyah Reserve Entrance, Boronia St, Bowral at 1.00pm. A walking guide will leave from here. Transport available for people who may have difficulty making the walk.

Bring a mug and a plate to share to afternoon tea.
