Händel: Friend or Foe? will feature alluring sonatas and duets for 2 baroque cellos by Händel, Bononcini, Geminiani, Lanzetti, Porpora and Haym. Through their compositions, Premier Baroque Cello Duo Cellissimo – with Belinda Manwaring & Tim Blomfield, will draw you into the London music scene rivalries that split the mid-18th century music-loving public into 2 broad musical camps. On one side were the defenders of the more conventional Italian opera style, who idolised the composer and cellist Giovanni Bononcini (1670-1747) and brought him to London. Meanwhile, enthusiasts of Händel’s new-style operas threw their lot in with the more recently arrived German. Satirically, the partisanship was captured in verse by contemporary poet John Byrom:
“Some say, compar’d to Buononcinny,
That Mynheer Handel’s but a Ninny.
Others aver, that he to Handel
Is scarcely fit to hold a Candle:
Strange that this difference there should be
Twixt Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dee!”
