The reserve is in Gundungurra Country, near Moss Vale in the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales (NSW). The south boundary of the reserve adjoins Morton National Park. Together with Morton National Park and Budawang National Park, it forms one of the largest conservation reserve areas in NSW.

Meryla Flora Reserve is an elevated sandstone plateau, typical of the Sydney Basin. It has waterfalls, weathered sandstone caves, overhangs, and deep, narrow gorges.

The reserve provides habitat for many species. Its sandstone caves and overhangs are used by bats. Its still waters are home to platypus. And its heath vegetation is an important food source for nomadic birds including yellow-tailed black cockatoos, wattle birds, and yellow-faced honeyeaters.

Four Wheel Driving is no longer permitted in the Reserve.
