A musical feast paired with a delicious lunch
Acacia Quartet present a program of famous Austrian and Bohemian string quartets, combined with an Australian piece about Tasmania’s wilderness:
Joseph Haydn – String Quartet Op. 77, No. 1 in G major Moya Henderson – ‘Kudikynah Cave’ Antonin Dvorak – String Quartet No. 12, Op. 96 in F major, ‘American’
The program will start with Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 77/1. Haydn is seen as the ‘father’ of the string quartet with 68 quartets to his name. This quartet is one of two pieces from Op. 77, representing Haydn’s swan song in the genre, composed in 1799 for the Prince Joseph Lobkowitz in Vienna.
Moya Henderson’s ‘Kudikynah Cave’ is about a glorious cave, located at the Franklin River in Tasmania, composed in 1987.
Antonin Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 12, Op. 96 is one of the most famous quartets, nicknamed ‘American’. Dvorak composed it in 1893 during his time as the Director of the National Conservatory in New York when he was invited to spend the summer in rural Spillville, Iowa, a tiny farming community of Czech immigrants.
