La Donna – La Mamma Art Exhibition by Alexis Costello
Alexis explores the complexities of being a woman and a mother, through colourful strokes on large-scale canvases.
As an intuitive painter, Alexis draws influence from her deep-feeling inner life, from the writer Clarissa Pinkola- Estes, and artists Frida Kahlo and Hulya Ozdemir, amongst others.
Her work is colourful, bold and unapologetic and explores the complexities, challenges and blessings of all-consuming motherhood, as well as the innate and extraordinary power we hold within us as women.
“Through this exhibition, I hope to connect with the power within women, to remind us that we are not alone on this journey, that I too, and so many women like us have been there, in the darkness, and felt feelings that are so guttural, profound and deep, that they can’t be put into words.
So I have attempted to paint them.
My work looks at Identity, sexuality, sensuality, feeling too much and feeling too little. Pain, grief, joy, friendship, romantic love and relationship to self.
I want to stimulate conversations about the magic inside woman, that we have been taught to conceal, but instead we must learn to let shine without shame or apology.
We are not too loud. We are not too much. We are deserving and powerful, soft and strong. We are all different and unique and that is okay.
In essence, my art is a deep dive into femininity, celebrating the human rights, the equality, the beauty and divinity within all women”.
