Long-nosed Potoroos Conservation in the Southern Highlands

Falls Visitor Centre 1301 Nowra Rd, Fitzroy Falls

Event Date: 29 Sep 2019, 1:30 pm

Melinda Norton NPWS has been involved in actively and monitoring the population of Long-nosed Potoroos in Barren Grounds Nature Reserve and Budderoo National Park in the Southern Highlands. Both study areas are important conservation reserves for this important species, with a large gap (300 km) to the next known viable population on the mid-north coast of NSW. Predation by foxes as well as fragmentation due to fires and/ or land clearing are believed to be the key threats they are facing across the species range. An ongoing fox control program began in Barren Grounds in 2005 and has since been expanded to include cat control and encompass Budderoo NP. Both predator and Potoroo numbers have been monitored over time and the results used to feed into management ( including fire) of these reserves.
