Sgraffito
Sgraffito is an Italian word which describe a technique used, mainly in pottery or on plaster walls, where layers of colour are applied, then scratched away to reveal other colours and patterns beneath.
Susie has a background in printmaking & decorative ceramics. The Sgraffito technique is used to great effect on many of her acrylic paintings in this exhibition.
The exhibition also features hand coloured mono and photopolymer prints , based on Susie’s love of ethnic art, carpets & textiles.
The mono prints are loosely based on motifs used in the Tenum Ikat weaving process. In 2023 Susie visited the Indonesian island of Sumba where these patterns are used.
As Susie says, the exhibition is primarily about her love of colour.
