Wilderness is very important to Julie, and this, her first solo exhibition, is based around time spent in mountainous areas mainly in Europe, but also Australia and, most recently, Morocco. The seeming infinity of atmosphere and the vertiginousness of mountain ranges provide important elements in her work. Julie’s art allows her to remember these exceptional places in the studio, but mostly she works from photographs taken on her travels rather than from memory alone. The paintings represent the drama of light and dark, scale and atmosphere characteristic of mountainous landscapes, although her works are occasionally abstracted. Her art can be seen as a contemporary response to place.
